The new HAWK (High-intensity Activated crossWalK) beacon has been installed and is located on Main Street between 200 and 250 East to improve pedestrian safety in Vernal. The HAWK beacon is not illuminated until it is activated by a pedestrian, triggering the warning flashing red lights to indicate to a driver to stop for pedestrians. Drivers must come to a complete stop when the light is a solid red. During the alternating flashing red lights, drivers must come to a complete stop and then can proceed after checking to make sure that pedestrians have already crossed their lane of travel. Each successive driver is legally required to come to a complete stop as well, before proceeding during the alternating flashing red phase. We are excited to have the HAWK here in Vernal to provide pedestrians with safe crossing opportunities here on Main Street.
